Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers Sculpture

10 Royal Albert Dr, Scarborough

On North Bay in Scarborough, you will see a former solitary soldier staring out to sea. The Freddie Gilroy sculpture was donated to the town in 2011 and created by sculptor Ray Lonsdale. He made this as a tribute to his friend and fallen soldiers.

The lone Freddie Gilroy sitting on his bench out to sea is not often left alone, with many people sitting with him, taking pictures and admiring the view. The statue is intended to represent ordinary people called upon to serve their country during the war. It is a must-visit spot on the Scarborough route.
