Interestingly, the Pannett Art Gallery was gifted to the residents of Whitby by Robert Elliott Pannett (1834 – 1920). From once very humble beginnings, he studied law in London before returning to his home town of Whitby, where he became a local dignitary and generous benefactor to the area. He had a passion for the arts and literature and thus bequeathed the gallery to benefit the local people, where it remains today. In the gallery, you will find everchanging exhibitions from local and national artists celebrating, amongst other themes, the beauty of the local area.
