Withernsea is one of the wildest routes on Route YC, and no experience is complete until you have made the voyage to Spurn Point.

Nearing the end of this wild peninsula is the iconic lighthouse, but nestling nearby is the Spurn Butterfly.

Local sculptor Emma Stothard created the piece to highlight the fragility of the Green Hair Streak Butterfly, a species known to the area. When closed, the wings of a green hairstreak butterfly are a distinctive bright emerald green colour. To give homage to the butterfly, Emma Stothard used copper wire for the wings.

Over time, the weather and salty sea air at Spurn Point will accelerate the oxidation on the surface of the copper wire, creating a beautiful Verdigris.

You can leave the car at the visitors centre and take a walk down the peninsula along the sandy beach before reaching the more industrial, still working end.

A more relaxing approach would be taking a Spurn Safari; just make sure you book in advance as these are a popular experience.
