The Balance of Hope and Threat Puffin Sculpture

RSPB Bempton Cliffs Cliff Lane, Bempton

About the Design
From a distance, this Puffin looks like a normal healthy bird. However, on approach, simple line drawings emerge, outlining the threats facing Puffins as well as the hope and optimism presented by the Green Energy sector. The iridescent blue-black area of the bird is oil-like, while the silver sand eels covering its belly fade to the beak, showing the depletion of food sources. Fleets of ships on the wings and elsewhere symbolise industrial over-fishing, and the cooling towers emerging from the tail represent global warming. On the middle of the Puffin’s back and the neck, the wind turbines bring optimism.
