The Hornsea Wave

Corner of South Promenade Hornsea

The Hornsea Wave is not just a sculpture but a representation of the town's rich history and culture. Emma Stothard's attention to detail and dedication to her craft can be seen in every wire strand that makes up the wave and fish.

The use of mild steel wire brings an element of fluidity and movement to the sculpture, mimicking the natural flow of the ocean waves. The wave stands tall at 2.5 meters, making it an impressive sight for visitors driving along Route YC. In addition to its visual appeal, this sculpture also holds sentimental value as a small ceramic piece from the iconic Hornsea Pottery collection inspired it. This shows how everyday objects can spark creativity and lead to something extraordinary.

The creation process was no easy feat, taking several months to complete before being galvanised for durability against harsh coastal elements. But for Emma Stothard, it was a labour of love – especially when it came to sculpting the intricate details of the fish.

Overall, The Hornsea Wave is more than just a beautiful addition to Route YC; it symbolises community pride and artistic expression that captures both past and present influences on Hornsea.

Mr ‘Edges is a small bespoke landscaping and gardening firm that operates from Hornsea on the East Coast of Yorkshire. Its founder and proprietor are Simon Goodall, who was first approached with the commission to create a relaxed planting environment around the sculpture that could withstand the crosswinds and sea salt-laden area.

His wealth of experience and love of using local and native materials created an area which will, like the Sculpture, continue to evolve and grow over the coming months and years.

The Mr ‘Edges’ team offers services to the local environs, including landscape design and building, pond building, tree and hedge work, and all things horticultural. Mr ‘Edges often collaborates with trades related to landscaping, further enhancing outdoor spaces with lighting, security, sculptures, and more and you can see more about their work here.

Emma Stothard collaborated with the Yorkshire Coast BID to create a collection of sculptures celebrating the coast's natural and historic beauty.

Emma was born in Hull and grew up in Kilnsea, a tiny village at the northern end of the extraordinary geographical feature and nature reserve Spurn Point. Her local knowledge and passion for the area have helped create striking pieces, including The Wykeham Damselfly, located outside the town of Scarborough.

After studying Fine Art at Southampton Solent University, Emma briefly moved to Somerset Levels, where she learnt the process of growing,

coppicing, bundling and weaving willow. She then returned to Yorkshire and was surrounded by the inspiring work of Henry Moore and Elizabeth Frink on the ground of what is now the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. She began making geese and small animals from woven willow.

Since then, Emma has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her sculptures grace the gardens of many locations around the country.

I started my love affair with clay when I was at school, where my art teacher ran an after school club. I gained a Saturday job in a local pottery, which allowed me to have my work fired. The more I worked with clay the more I was hooked. Finding inspection in every thing and where I go. I saved up enough money to buy a second hand kiln and then there was no stopping the endless possibilities.

My love of pottery just grew and grew. Making a tiny pottery studio in the bottom of my garden in Sutton on Hull, where I can always be found." Meeting my soul mate and falling in love over pottery and getting married 2023 we spend many a happy hour potting together.

My love of the sea and walking on the beach at Hornsea gave me the perfect inspiration for this project. Beach combing capturing the textures and colours of the rocks, stones, shells and sand of this beautiful part of the East Yorkshire coast. Capturing it in ceramic, I used lots of different clays to create compose each tile.
