Once a small, quiet town reliant on fishing and industry, Whitby has been transformed over the years into a bustling all-around destination place. However, the fishing industry and marine heritage still play a significant role in the town's charm and providing some of the freshest catch on the Yorkshire Coast.
The working harbours and iconic swing bridge divide the East from the West, providing great spaces to view tall ships, fishing vessels and yachts as they come in and out throughout the day.
The annual Regatta is a fantastic celebration of the areas history and a must attend the event. Be aware that you should book your accommodation early so as not to be disappointed, and so you can have the whole day to evening Regatta experience.
At the mouth of the harbour lie the East and West Piers. With its lighthouse added in 1840, the West Pier is the easiest to access and the perfect spot to take a stroll and enjoy sunrise and sunsets across the sea.The harbour is still a busy working environment. Its fishing fleet and a host of yachts fill the upper and lower harbours, separated by the swing bridge. If you love the sea and exploring areas in a non-traditional way, there are plenty of boat trips you can take, from sea-angling to pleasure boats to simply soak up the view and sea-spray.
There are many great bars on the East and West side where you can watch the boats come in and out. Or suppose you are looking to be closer to the action. In that case, areas by the swing bridge offer excellent vantage points, particularly during bridge openings.
This is a busy area all year round, so be mindful of the ongoing traffic that goes through the centre. If possible, park at the Park and Ride, or you may end up circling through the town for a central parking space is in short supply.
