Whitby Walks this Autumn

If you like to get outdoors and are looking for inspiration, here are two great walking routes in and around Whitby this autumn on Route YC.

Autumn - as the nights draw in, it is time to wrap up warm and cosy and make those daylight hours count. Yorkshire is a beautiful place at this time of the year as the leaves turn to glorious reds, browns, and yellows. Beaches and mountains may be quiet, but all the better is to enjoy brisk walks and getting outdoors.

The temperature at this time of year is great; no need to worry about the hot sunshine, which is no enjoyment when walking for many of us. It’s safer underfoot, too, before winter draws in and pathways become brittle and icy.

Read below to find two of the best Whitby walking routes to take during the autumn months on Route YC.

Discover the town of Whitby and its landmarks

Setting off in the morning before the first light to find a lovely spot with a hot flask to watch the sunrise will start your day off perfectly. We suggest starting your walk at Whitby Abbey. There is a car park there too, allowing you to park away from the busy town.

Discover the history behind the Abbey, which dates back to the 7th century. Since the 20th century, the ruins of the church have been declared as a Grade I listed building and are now in the care of the English Heritage.

Take the 199 steps down into the town and watch others struggle to come back up. But do not forget, that will be you later! After wandering around the cobbled paths steeped in history, finish the day with fish and chips, piping hot and crisp, perfect for when the autumn evening is drawing in, and the sun is setting.

Head out on foot and follow the Rail Trail

Fast track to Whitby’s countryside and walk the Rail Trail from Grosmont to Goathland. A lovely linear ramble along the old railway line that meanders and flows through stunning woodland, not to mention a famous movie set too.

The Rail Trail is for you if you like a walk with a gentle gradient and solid surfaces. Setting off from the vintage Train Station at Goathland, featured in the famous Harry Potter movie, it will take around 2 ½ hours to complete and is roughly 3.5 miles long. However, if you take a slight detour at Beck Hole, there is an excellent pub for a thirst-quenching drink before you carry on to Grosmont.

You can catch a lift back on the North Yorkshire Moor Railway, provided the steam train is running, adding to the treat.
